A Focus on AG STEAM Education
STEAM education is utilizing the subjects of Science, Technology, Entrepreneurship, Arts & Mathematics to provide a well-rounded learning experience. The George Washington Carver Food Research Institute focuses on Agriculture STEAM (Ag STEAM) to communicate how nature is connected to life. The goal of GWCFRI is to provide resources to students, parents and teachers to provide experiential learning opportunities to build critical thinking skills that can be applied to solve problems.
The purpose of the Ag STEAM training is to provide access to educational materials for all to elevate the mind, body, and spirit, and to provide awareness of the various doors that can be opened through agriculture career pathways.

Junior Foodpreneur Spotlight:
Paige Martin
My name is Paige Martin, and I am a sophomore at Alabama A&M University, where I am pursuing a major in Food Science. I chose this field because I am passionate about the concept of food as medicine and am eager to develop products for individuals like my father who have dietary restrictions. I aim to use my creativity to create foods that are both healthy and delicious. In addition to diligently maintaining a 4.0 GPA, I have conducted a research study evaluating the effects of time and temperature on the flavor perception of lavender in cupcakes. If I were to offer advice to students embarking on their college journey, it would be to remember that only you can define who you are!
William G. Mays Junior Foodpreneur Academy
William “Bill” G. Mays was a scientist, entrepreneur, philanthropist, civic leader, and a distinguished member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. In 1980 Mr. Mays founded Mays Chemical Company, a national distributor of chemical and raw materials for food, beverage, pharmaceutical, personal care and industrial accounts. Over his lifetime he was instrumental in helping to mentor over 200 individuals launch businesses. I was one of those people. I had the honor and privilege to be a part of the Mays Chemical Company family for seven years where I was nurtured and taught the science behind vendor management, supply chain continuity, blending and specialized packaging. In loving memory, his legacy of stewardship, will continue to live on through The William G. Mays Junior Foodpreneur Academy where we will develop the next generation of food entrepreneurs.
